Freelance Nannies have no training in proper confinement care. Methods used depend solely on ‘self-taught’ and hearsay. Sad to say, often wrong advise is given to the confinement mothers.
Since no records or background of the nanny is available, selection solely depends appearance, first impressions, and ‘experience’ claimed by the nanny. Selecting a nanny based on this criterion can indeed turned out to be very costly and stressful.
Although your friend and relatives’ recommendation are with good intentions, often this will occur: “My friend had this Nanny and says she is good,……but it turned out to be totally the opposite”. This is common as expectations and requirements vary from one another.
As most freelance nannies regard their confinement assignments
as a part-time basis (only will find job when money is needed) and a ‘one-off’ affair, there is no obligation to do a good job.
A ‘NO SHOW’ often occurs by Freelance Nanny when the time your confinement is to start. It could be someone paying her a higher rate than you OR she is tied up with her other assignment.
As there is no company monitoring and supervising her job performance, very often freelance nannies are domineering and will do what they feel is ‘right’. This is because her feeling of ‘If I were to leave now, no one can take care of you and your baby’ or
‘You solely depend on me, so I can do what I like’.
As you solely depend on her, you must be mentally prepared for the big ‘IF’.
IF half way through your confinement,
she fall sick.
she leave because of ‘personal’ reasons.
she suddenly ‘walk off’ due to some ‘self-made’ excuses.
you found out that she really have a ‘BIG’ attitude problem.
ask you for a loan.
starts quarreling with your other family members.
you found out that she smokes in the room with the baby.
These are actual real life situation we’ve heard from mothers using freelance nannies. The list can go on and on.
